Oxford is located about 50 miles northwest of London in the county of Oxfordshire and is the site of the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the UK. The River Thames flows through Oxford, though it goes by the name Isis there from "Thamesis", its Latin name.

Oxford's history can be traced back to the 8th century. The university is first mentioned in 12th century records, with the earliest colleges (University, Balliol, and Merton) established in the mid-13th century. Today there are 39 colleges of Oxford University.

Location of Oxford, England, UKOxford is also an industrial town, with a long history of automobile production. Morris Motors was once based nearby, and today the BMW Mini is produced there.

Oxford's climate is relatively mild. Summers are warm with long hours of daylight; winters, with its shorter days, are cold though temperatures below freezing are uncommon. Records have been kept in the town since 1815 and a month has never gone by without some rain; Oxford, however, is comparably one of the driest cities in the country.
